Dentist
Finding time to go to the dentist could be quite difficult as it was often a full day journey to get to the dentist office and back. Additionally, the cost of dental work could be prohibitive.
There was a regular column in the Lethbridge Herald entitled “That Body of Yours” written by James W Barton, M.D. which advised on a variety of topics including dentistry. It seems that this column could advise people, including those living a distance away from town when they might need to visit the dentist. One example of this comes in his column published on July 23, 1932 on page 11 of the Lethbridge Herald, entitled “Retaining Dead Teeth”. In this column, he discusses the risks not visiting a dentist to get a dead tooth removed, thereby encouraging readers with a similar condition to make a visit to the dentist before infection sets in.
This is another example of content in the Lethbridge Herald during the Great Depression relating to dentistry. This ad for Forhan’s Toothpaste encourages visits to the dentist as well as the use of Forhan’s toothpaste as a means of home care. This advertisement was published on page 11 of the Lethbridge Herald on July 23, 1932. It uses fear as a main means of promoting the product.
